Just watched the re-run of the golden globe awards on tv this morning.
Some of my favourite shows/actresses/actors that won / shld have won :
- sheldon cooper: you totally deserve the best actor for Big Bang Theory- i love ur OCD habits
- inception didnt win but i thought it was a brillant movie
- Natalie Portman, you are beautiful: havent had a chance to catch the Black Swan but its on my to-watch list once it starts screening in theatres
- last but not least, THE SOCIAL NETWORK: you deserved all the awards.
The Social Network made me proud of my geeky past- (i wont say geeky present because its been eons since i coded anything.) But it changed the way how ppl look at computer science / computer engineers, isn't it? Nobody thought we were cool but just a bunch of nerdy bespectacled kids hovering over laptops sitting at benches in school. Ironically, the only times i stayed up late in my life, was not to study for exams, but to write programming codes for projects. Oh i remember the adrenaline rush of typing as fast as we can during programming lab exams. Which other modules allows you to use a computer and bring in as much notes as you want? And of course the satisfaction of your output. Our ideas of having a good time was not partying at clubs, but forming virtual "parties" instead, in computer games. Yes i remember the fond times of playing Maple Story, trying to level up by killing pigs. (I still remember one night at like 4 or 5 am, my mum walked into my room and asked why i wasnt sleeping, and i had to explain: i can't, i've got to kill these pigs before i can sleep. I am quite sure she thought i was mad at that time.) Then theres always our favourite activity in between lessons / after classes: watching dramas. People would think that we are real hard working, always staring at our laptop screens on the benches, but in reality we are plugged in watching the latest korean / japanese/ taiwanese dramas. So what if the ppl perceived computer engineers to be nerdy and geeky. We were cool, my frens, and Mark Zuckerberg is probably the most iconic one of our kind.
Unfortunately though, I have given up this path as a career a longtime ago, so i will never ever become as rich as Mark Zuckerberg, but I'm glad he glorified nerd/ geeks that have long been under appreciated for their efforts.
Think of it, without these brillant nerds/ geeks, we wont have:
Microsoft
Apple
Google
Yahoo
Facebook
Twitter
And these, you gotta admit, have changed your lives, for better or worse.
